“Marijuana kills brain cells.”
Opponents of marijuana claim that the use of marijuana causes persistent violations of the brain structure and functions and leads to memory loss, cognitive impairment, personality disorders and decreased performance.
None of the medical tests currently used to detect brain damage in humans, has found harm from marijuana, even with its long-term use in high doses. One of the first studies reported brain damage in rhesus macaques after six months of exposure to highly concentrated marijuana smoke. In a recent, more thorough study, scientists did not reveal any evidence of abnormalities in the brain functions in monkeys which were forced to inhale marijuana smoke daily for a year in doses equivalent to smoking 4 to 5 cigarettes with marijuana per day. Thus, the opinion that marijuana kills brain cells is based on a speculative message that appeared a quarter of a century ago, which has never been confirmed by scientific research.
