Lithuanian Seimas Committee Approves Legalization of Medical Marijuana

A member of the Seimas of Lithuania brought cannabisdiol oil to the Healthcare Committee to convince the people’s deputies of the useful properties of cannabis.

The deputy of the Seimas Mykolas Majauskas (“Fatherland’s Union – Christian Democrats of Lithuania”) wrote about it on his Facebook page.

Majauskas said that hemp oil from varieties grown in Lithuania containing CBD (Cannabidiol), which has no narcotic properties, was brought to the Seimas. He emphasized that the Ministry of Health considered such oil to be a drug, but that it was widely used worldwide by patients with epilepsy, cancer or multiple sclerosis.

“I am glad that the Health Committee unanimously approved today that the mentioned cannabis products should soon be fully legalized in Lithuania!” – declared Mayauskas.

The deputy noted that in many countries of the European Union such products can be bought as easily and legally as “bread and butter”. He used to bring hemp tea to the Seimas.

Majauskas advocates the use of cannabis in medicines. Earlier, he initiated the relevant amendments to the law on the control of medicines in the Seimas, which were approved by the parliament.

In July, the Lithuanian government approved amendments allowing the use of the entire cannabis plant for processing and the supply of any cannabis products to the market, not just fibres and seeds. The new law is expected to enter into force on the 1st of May 2020.

Currently, cannabis can be grown in Lithuania only for industrial purposes to produce fibres and seeds or for horticulture.
